CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Melanie

I woke up to the glow of the hot alien sun coming through the gaps in the tent’s fabric. Stretching, I yawned, then wiggled my fingers and toes. I felt oddly refreshed. I’d slept better than I had in quite some time.

When I’d first heard Taliok outside the tent, telling Galok he would sleep there, my body had become a bundle of nerves at his proximity. But after a while, I’d relaxed into an almost eerie calm. I for the first time in a long time, I felt... safe.

I just didn’t know if I should trust it.

“Morning,” Kat groaned, rubbing her eyes. We both sat up and started getting dressed.

“How’d you sleep?” I asked.

“Not bad.” As she did up her pants, her gaze narrowed at me. “How about you. I didn’t hear anything last night, so I assume Mr. Dark, Tall, and Scarred didn’t try anything sketchy.”

“No, of course not. He’s a good guy.”

He’s a good guy? Where did that come from?

“Whatever you say,” Kat said, slipping into her solar protection jacket. I did the same, and the quickly slathered on some sunscreen from our rapidly depleting tubes.

When we stepped outside, we saw that Taliok and Galok were already ready. Taliok had already taken down his tent, and was strapping it to his mount. I bit my lip, watching the cording of his muscles as he worked. When he finished, he turned, then noticed me. He rummaged through one of the satchels on the irkdu, then jogged over with valok gel and some more dried meat.

“Here, eat something before the journey,” he said. His voice sounded softer than I’d ever heard it, and I felt myself flush.

“Thanks,” I murmured, taking the food from him. As I did so, the tips of my fingers touched his palms, and I felt his whole body jolt at the touch. For a split second, I wished we were alone. More and more I was wanting to repeat the kiss from the other night.

And maybe even go further?

I was losing it. I was getting way too ahead of myself.

He’s a good guy.

Those words had come so naturally when speaking to Kat. And they felt true and right. But dread sank low in my stomach as I remembered that I’d thought my ex, Greg, had been a good guy at first, too.

But Taliok was nothing like him. The more time I spent around him, the more sure about that fact I’d felt. But did that mean that I could truly trust Taliok, with everything? My body, maybe even my heart?

My questions were interrupted by Galok hurrying over to Kat, his hands similarly full of meat the way Taliok’s had been.

“Look, Kat. I have already completed a fine hunt this morning and cooked you fresh meat.”

“I don’t eat breakfast,” Kat snapped. I suppressed a smile, knowing full well that was a lie.

Galok didn’t seem deterred.

“Then I will save it for when you are hungry.”

Soon enough we were all packed and ready to go. Taliok lifted me onto the mount again, this time without any strangely sexy belly-button touching, and we got going.
